FOR 4TH GRADE

PREVIOUS

MEASUREMENT is a common core content. Common core content means it touches K-12 students.

The State expected the 4th grade student to use their addition and multiplication skill in solving perimeter problem. The student must understand the measurement terminology like " perimeter " . What does it mean to measure the perimeter of any shape? It means you get a tape measure and you walk around the side of the shape and record the measurement of each side. Then finally you add all the measurements of the sides and that is your perimeter measurement. Because measurement like perimeter is use in everyday life the State wants to make sure the student know how to do it. This is a Pre-Algebra early exposure where the student learn the skill in extracting quantitative relationship or instruction from word problem. For example, the quantitative word clue in this problem is find the perimeter of the yard with the given shape. It means the student must do addition or multiplication or combination, which they know already.

Pre-Algebra and Algebra are higher grade level mathematics that teaches student to analyze the question(s) to be answered, look for word clues, number sequence pattern, organize given information, determine how to represent the problem, and identify implicit and explicit assumptions that have been made.

Measurement and Algebra skills are needed in coding like in expert system supervised machine learning algorithm using software like MATLAB, Python, R, Javascript, C, and C++. This skill is most likely to be used in Excel spreadsheet or similar spreadsheet software in most business today.

ANSWER A.

To answer this question. You must remember the meaning of the word perimeter. The word perimeter tells you what to do?

It tells you to add all the length around the shape of an object. In the above problem

finding the perimeter of the diagram means :

Perimeter = 4+4+4+4+8+8 This is the correct answer.

But that answer is not one of the correct answer that you can select. So what should you do? You apply the distributive property of addition. 4+4+4+4 = (4 x 4)

8 + 8 = (2 x 8)

Now the perimeter = 4+4+4+4+8+8 = (4x4) + (2x8) WHICH IS ANSWER : A
