NUMBER AND OPERATIONS, ALGEBRA, MEASUREMENT, GEOMETRY AND DATA ANALYSIS are common core content. Common core content means it touches K-12 students.

The State expected the 4th grade student to master the concept of writing and reading coordinates of a point. Why it is very important to master the coordinate system? Because the student are going to use it in algebra, measurement, geometry, and data analysis. In the line graph shown below the question is what are the coordinates of the endpoints of the line segment? The student must remember that coordinates of any point follows the same rule
( x , y ) . It means first select a point then draw a vertical line until it touches the x - axis. When it touches the x - axis , what is the number, let say x = 2. Now you have the x - coordinate answer ( 2, __) . To find the answer for y - coordinate go to the same point but this time draw a horizontal line until it touches the y-axis. What is the number, let say
y = 7. There you have the answer for the coordinate (2,7) , always remember point coordinate always follow the rule (x, y).

Student seems bored studying all numbers because they are not told that those numbers represent the physical thing. For example the number 2 can represent as student number 2
( names are hidden for privacy). Then the number 7 can represent the test score the student got. So student keep in mind all the numbers that you are studying it represent any physical object or any ideas that you can't use your five senses.
