GEOMETRY is a common core content.Common core content means it touches K-12 students.
The State expected the 5th grade student to have early exposure to the concept of vertex - edge graph as part of geometry. Geometry teaches student how to reason and justify their answer using geometric relationship, spatial reasoning, and concept of attributes. For example degree of vertex attribute simply means tell me how many connected line you can see from the vertex. This is an appropriate challenging question for 5th grade student because it only involves counting the lines. It is challenging because the student need to connect quantitatively then meaning of the word vertex , degree and even number. If their teacher did not have time to cover this subject, the student don't know how to answer the question.
Vertex - Edge graph is very useful visualization tool use in higher mathematics. It is use in computer science in graph theory and graph database. Decision tree machine learning algorithm is one application of vertex-edge graph.
