NUMBERS AND OPERATION is a common core content.Common core content means it touches K-12 students.
The State expected 5th grade student to master how to add and subtract integer number. Students must remember the limitation of whole number and why was the concept of integer number needed. They must also remember that integer number follows rule when doing arithmetic operation like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They must understand that calculator and computer follows the integer arithmetic operation rule when performing computation.
The concept of integer is a foundational knowledge to higher mathematics. It is used in computer hardware design, configuration setting in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and computer programming.
